Jonathan Weston, Artist
Artist Statement

The canvas is my stage, where my love of paint and color are married with the minute particularities of human beings in their character form. Some of the work here represents moments of euphoria and sly humor while other pieces convey vulnerability and sensuality. Whether the mood be cheerful or grim, they evoke an emotion that is desiring to communicate with the onlooker. Each piece invites the viewer to feel as if they have just had a visual conversation with someone they felt they have known, or perhaps themselves.

Throughout art history, identification of male and female has been strongly present as an underlying metaphor in communicating an idea and depicting wide ranges of emotions. It is a code for me as well to communicate through painting grins and glares while indulging in the enigma of color. I am eager to explore everything about the human identity and paint is my medium to further discover our amazing existance. These pieces represent characters on a stage in my mind. In some way, they are, all of us. They are painted with emotions we all share and come together to make a mirror for the viewer, hopefully a mirror in open light with clear reflection. -Jonathan Weston
